Tool comparison · Reviewed
Luphra vs Adam for text-and-photo part design.
Adam's current website describes a connected hardware-team workspace. Its separate CADAM project is the text-and-image-to-CAD tool. This comparison distinguishes the two so you can evaluate the right workflow.
Choose by the work you need to do
Choose Luphra when you want to develop a single custom part in chat and then download or order it. Evaluate CADAM when editable OpenSCAD and parameter controls fit your workflow. Consider Adam's broader workspace when the job spans existing CAD, engineering documents, and suppliers.
The workflow, side by side
Published by Luphra. Competitor details come from the linked official sources; unverified features are identified below.
| What matters | Luphra | Adam / CADAM |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs | Text, photos, and sketches. Add measured dimensions and explain hidden features.Luphra photo workflow | CADAM accepts natural-language requests and image references.Adam CADAM documentation |
| Editing and downloads | Revise in chat; download available STL and STEP files. Reopen STEP in compatible CAD software. A STEP file alone does not preserve a native feature tree.Luphra CAD workflow | CADAM documents parameter sliders and STL, SCAD, and DXF exports. Its listed formats do not include STEP.Adam CADAM documentation |
| Manufacturing size | Automated CAD printing requires every axis to be strictly under 220 mm. This is an ordering limit, not a limit on downloadable design size. | No standard print envelope was verified in the cited Adam/CADAM pages. Check your chosen manufacturer. |
| Materials and fulfillment | PLA or PETG on the current automated CAD print path, subject to live availability and order eligibility. Printing is purchased separately. | Adam describes supplier research and quote preparation. A standard material catalog and built-in print fulfillment offer were not verified.Adam hardware workspace |
| Design pricing (USD) | Monthly Plus: $0 for the first 30 days, then $49/month; card required. Ultra: $119/month. Physical printing is extra. 01 / Pick the output first
If your next step is an external solid-model edit, test Luphra's available STEP export in the CAD package you actually use. If you prefer a script you can change and regenerate in OpenSCAD, test CADAM's SCAD output. An STL is useful for printing but is not a substitute for editable construction history.
02 / Keep the photo and dimensions together
Use the same reference images, measurements, and requested revision in both tools. For an enclosure, record the internal space, wall thickness, hole positions, and connector clearance. Compare the exported geometry after a revision, not just the first preview.
03 / Compare total cost for your part
Keep design subscription costs separate from manufacturing, shipping, and tax. In Luphra, request the current offer after reviewing the design. For a CADAM export, include the costs of your own printer or chosen manufacturing service. No fixed per-part price or turnaround comparison is implied here.
Try the same brief
These are example requests and review steps, not completed tests or verified manufacturing results.
An enclosure brief for both tools
Create an open enclosure for a non-critical electronics prototype from this sketch and reference photo. The required internal space is 90 × 60 × 25 mm, with 3 mm walls. Ask for board-hole locations and connector clearances before adding mounting features. Then show me how to increase the internal length by 5 mm while preserving the wall thickness.
Measure internal and external dimensions separately. Confirm the downloaded file supports the next edit you need.
Questions before you choose
- Are Adam and CADAM the same product?
- Adam currently presents a broader hardware-team workspace. CADAM is its separately documented text-and-image-to-CAD project. Use the product-specific documentation when comparing inputs and exports.
- Does CADAM export STEP?
- The CADAM documentation reviewed here lists STL, SCAD, and DXF, not STEP. Adam's other CAD workflows depend on the connected tool; do not infer their exports from CADAM's list.
- What can Luphra print?
- The current automated CAD print path supports PLA and PETG when every axis is strictly under 220 mm, subject to geometry checks, live material availability, and a successful quote. Other designs may remain available for download.
